You may have noticed

that my recent tutorials have been based in the 3.0 environment, and you ask “why?”.

Well, AS3 is better than AS2…

Some say it runs 10 times quicker with actionscript, I say – it can do so much more.
There are more classes, functions, and amongst other things support.

But, why change – why not. Live up to your name, try it – challenge it.

For, if you do not find it better – then stick with AS2, knowing sub-consciously that what you are doing, my friend, is wasting your time.

AS3 creating MovieClips

Not the “createEmptyMovieclip” you know!

First we load in the class:

import flash.display.MovieClip

Then we define a new movie-clip:

var newEmptyMovieclip:MovieClip = new MovieClip()

Alter its properties:

newEmptyMovieclip.name = "box"

And finally add it to the stage:

addChild(lineOfSight)

AS3 getting mouse coordinates

Because it localises everything!

IF you try the simple approach you will get the wrong value when you hover over something. Say you want the STAGE mouse position. If you roll over a MOVIECLIP it localises to it and displays a value relative to the MOVIECLIP and not the STAGE.

Heres a fix:

Using global variables in AS3 is harder than before…

Firstly you need to create the globals.as file:

Then in your document:
