W00h00, RPG?

You may be familiar with full flash game tutorials… My last one was the movement one. But, it didn’t have a ‘full flash game’ at the end. Not a proper one anyway. This does. This tutorial ‘group’ will however allow you to make a ‘full flash game’.

“Role-playing game is a term used to describe a broad family of games in which players assume the roles of characters, or take control of one or more avatars, in a fictional setting. Actions taken within the game succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines.”


And that’s what we’ll make… RPG’s can be in many forms; 3d First person, 3d Third person, 2d. And we will make a 2d ‘retro’ styled. Much like Pokemon or Zelda. So stay tuned, because we’re going to learn alot;
Variables, Depths, Collisions, Inventory, Scores, Loops, Decisions, AI (Artificial Intelligence)

Setting up:

To begin the tutorial do the following:

First – Find a sprite sheet and import it into flash or draw the sprites

Second – Create a movie-clip with 4 frames, labelled; “left”, “up”, “right” and “down”

Third – Create movie-clips for each of the animations and place them on the appropriate frames in the appropriate place (feet should be on (0,0), the little + registration point)

Coins

So, you want coins? Let’s begin. To begin this tutorial create a new layer in the player and draw around his feet, make it movieclip instance it as “Hit” and make it’s alpha 0. Now we can begin. Basically all this does it allows us to do hitTesting only when the players feet touch the coin or whatever.

So let’s begin…

Create a circle and call it “coin”.  Now let’s take a look at the hitTesting code we’ll be using…

Line 1 : checks if the coin hits on our ‘feet’ (the hit movieclip at the beginning of this tutorial)
Line 2 : adds one to the score
Line 3 : removes the movieclip

Please make sure to include

score = 0 in onClipEvent(load){

But we want it to work dynamically without hundreds of these hitTests. Reintroducing, the “for” loop. Let’s begin.

The Inventory System :D

Setting Up

Creating this was relatively easy, just tim consuming. Hopefully for you lucky readers you will be able to just copy and paste, grrr. Oh well here’s my attempt. Btw, on the above demo you can also ‘sell’ your item. I gotta tell you, there’s alot of arrays in here. Oh how i love em. Just kidding – they do my head in. But enough of me, actually if you want to hear more about me then say so, i might update the about section.

Ok, so to set up your ‘inventory’ create a movieclip, mine is; 50 x 50 px, white with black border. Then two more movieclips / buttons, whatever for the buy buttons. In this tutorial i’ll show you how to make two items to deal with but you could easily do more…

Now place your inventory blocks where you want the ‘inventory’ and name them; “Slot0″, “Slot1″, “Slot2″… Etc (without quote marks). It’s important your first one is “Slot0″ because arrays start at 0?!?. Now, count how many you have, if your last is Slot11 you have 12. And finally, instance name the buy buttons “BuyPotion” and “BuySword”.

RPG game creation tutorial – part 5

Some time ago I published part 4, now i bring you part 5 :D . Basically we will learn how to create dynamic tiling, No biggie. To be honest it is a ‘complicated’ subject but hey. You got me :D

So what is ‘dynamic tiling’ basically we’ll create a tile based engine where we just input some numbers in some arrays and it makes all the backgrounds and stuff.

First things then… Create a movieclip 25x25px with 3 frames, grass, path and water. Now right click it in the library and choose Export for actionscript then change the identifier to “Bricks”. Now, actionscript can read it.

Now the code… In the root timeline add

n = 0

We will use this later to count the bricks and aid referencing.
